An innovative new course for those studying English in the context of Islamic beliefs, history and current issues. Ideal for students seeking to develop transferable academic skills and strategies, such as: listening to talks and lectures, reading academic articles and books, taking part in discussions, giving presentations and writing academic essays. The syllabus concentrates on key vocabulary for different aspects of Islamic and religious studies, and on words and phrases commonly used in academic English. English for Islamic Studies has 15 units, each of which looks at a different aspect of Islam and its beliefs, culture and practices. Odd-numbered units concentrate on listening skills, while even-numbered units are centred on reading skills. Each unit is divided into three lessons: Lesson 1 contains vocabulary for the topic; vocabulary skills such as word-building, giving definitions and explanations; guidance on using synonyms for paraphrasing. Lesson 2 contains reading or listening texts and skills development. Lesson 3 contains speaking and/or writing tasks that recycle language and skills from the unit. The Skills check at the end of each unit is a useful summary of skills learnt or practised in the unit. There is also a glossary, vocabulary list and list of useful language exponents for each unit at the back of the book. Each unit provides between three and five hours of classroom activity, with the possibility of extra hours to be spent on suggested activities such as research, individual presentations or essay writing.

IELTS Target 7.0: Preparation for IELTS Academic IELTS Target 7.0 addresses the increasing trend of institutions demanding higher language competence from students. This level provides less pre-skills guidance and scaffolding, and more post-skills practice and analysis. It aims to develop core language skills and improve scores through more challenging topics and tasks. The short course consists of four units, each of five modules — Listening, Reading, Writing, Speaking and Exam Practice. The material in each module, which is a slightly higher level than students will encounter in the exam, aims to help extend and refine language skills to an advanced level. Each unit consists of five modules: 1. Listening: This module is in two sections. The first section briefly engages students in a topic before they complete a task that focuses on a key skill or particular IELTS exam technique. The second section analyzes vocabulary and develops language skills. 2. Reading: As with the Listening Module. 3. Writing: The first section deals with task analysis and allows students to look at model compositions and collaborate with their peers before completing a task in the second section. The third section focuses on language development and grammar. 4. Speaking: This prepares students for the type of interaction they can expect with the examiner in Parts 2 and 3 the Speaking test. Follow-up questions help students extend answers and build on key speaking skills. 5. Exam Practice: Listening and reading skills are alternately practised under exam-type conditions. Four additional writing tasks are provided in a separate section at the end of the course. See accompanying Teacher's Book.

IELTS Target 5.0: Preparation for IELTS General Training — Leading to IELTS Academic IELTS Target 5.0 is aimed at students wishing to prepare for the IELTS exam while studying at pre-intermediate level. The main focus of preparation is IELTS General Training, as this is more appropriate for this level of student. Additional bridging material is incorporated later in the course for those students wishing to continue with IELTS Academic. The IELTS General Training section consists of three five-unit sections that take the student from a strong elementary to intermediate level. The earlier units focus on basic skills and basic language, including sentence structure and spelling. The IELTS Academic section consists of five units that prepare students for the academic content of reading passages and the more challenging writing tasks. By the end of the course, students will be working with text and language that is close to that found in the exam. Exam tips are provided throughout the course to familiarize students with the various exam tasks and to provide advice on how to obtain the highest score possible. Each General Training unit consists of five modules: 1. Speaking and Vocabulary: This prepares students for the type of interaction they can expect with the examiner. The vocabulary selected is that most frequently encountered during the Speaking test. 2. Listening: This module is in two sections. The first section engages students in a topic and pre-teaches key vocabulary, before focusing on a key skill or particular IELTS exam technique. The second section practises the skill. 3. Reading: As with the Listening Module. 4. Writing: This deals with both parts of the Writing test, each unit focusing on a different writing skill or technique. There is a focus on guided writing, with model compositions and reports for all tasks. 5. Consolidation and Exam Practice: The first part revises the speaking focus and vocabulary in the first module. The second part practises listening, reading or writing skills under exam-type conditions. Each Academic unit consists of Reading and Writing Modules only. The course also includes end-of-section review material and mock tests. See accompanying Teacher's Book and Interactive Course Book CD-ROM.
