In this work, the language of botany from plant structure to genetic modification defined and explained for students of plant sciences and botanical enthusiasts. The dictionary, with over 4,000 entries, covers the many subject areas that make up pure and applied botany. The areas covered include physiology of plants, cell biology, biochemistry, plant pathology, plant anatomy, genetics, evolution and plant ecology as well as important applied topics, such as horticulture, plant breeding, investigative methods, conservation practice and microbiology. To reflect their growing importance in today's world there is extended coverage of biotechnology and genetic engineering, which play such a central role in current developments in plant breeding. The comprehensive coverage of this dictionary is designed to help undergraduates and advanced school students studying biology, botany or plant sciences. It will also be an invaluable resource to naturalists, geographers, horticulturalists and anyone interested in the study and conservation of plants. Following the style of the Collins reference series, the dictionary contains short defining entries, longer explanatory entries and a selection of review entries on such key topics as chloroplasts, DNA and gene, plant groups such as Cyanobacteria or lichen, and investigative equipment, such as the electron microscope. In addition the book contains diagrams and charts throughout the text to further the understanding of entries. It also includes a selection of recommended internet sites that will help and student of botany take the subject further. The dictionary has been compiled by a team of scientists, and edited by Jill Bailey in consultation with Sir John Burnett, Chairman of the Trustees, National Biodiversity Network and Dr Andrew Lack, Senior Lecturer in Environmental Biology, Oxford Brookes University.

Girlfriend in a Coma

Girls, memory, parenting, millennial fear — all served Coupland-style. Karen, an attractive, popular student, goes into a coma one night in 1979. Whilst in it, she gives birth to a healthy baby daughter; once out of it, a mere eighteen years later, she finds herself, Rip van Winkle-like, a middle-aged mother whose friends have all gone through all the normal marital, social and political traumas and back again...This tragicomedy shows Coupland in his most mature form yet, writing with all his customary powers of acute observation, but turning his attention away from the surface of modern life to the dynamics of modern relationships, but doing so with all the sly wit and weird accuracy we expect of the soothsaying author of Generation X, Shampoo Planet, Life After God, Microserfs and Polaroids from the Dead.

From naughty children to rebellious teenagers, Rosie and Alex have stuck by each other through thick and thin. But just as they're discovering the joys of teenage nights on the town and dating disasters, they're separated. Alex's family moves from Dublin to America — and Alex goes with them. For good. Rosie's lost without her best friend. But on the eve of her departure to join Alex in Boston, Rosie gets news that will change her life forever — and keep her at home in Ireland. Their magical connection sees them through the ups and downs of each other's lives but neither of them knows whether their friendship can really survive the years and miles — as well as new relationships. And at the back of Rosie's mind is whether they were meant to be more than just good friends all along. Misunderstandings, circumstances and sheer bad luck have kept them out of each other’s' arms, but when presented with the ultimate opportunity, will they gamble everything — including their friendship — for true love? Destiny, Alex and Rosie discover, is a funny thing and fate isn't quite done with them yet!
