This Gun Is for Hire is a guidebook that provides insight into the ongoing challenge of translating personal design approaches into viable — and paid — commercial projects. The book illustrates how designers and clients can work together to develop projects that are both commercially successful and push creative limits. Not only is This Gun Is for Hire full of examples of recent corporate, graphic and product design projects that truly inspired their creators, their clients and their clients' customers, but it also presents them in such a way that others can learn from them. The diverse projects from international designers such as Eikes Grafischer Hort, Fons Hickmann, Attik, Chocolate Skateboard and Hansen Ho are depicted with impressive visuals and are accompanied by text explaining the original briefing and the circumstances leading up to either their implementation or a lost pitch. The book is rounded out by a series of interviews with and essays by working designers on issues including corporate communications, inspiration, and creative development clarifying how the design process and client relations are interrelated.

The work and methods of illustrators from around the world reveal the scope of this creative discipline. In recent years, illustration has evolved from a purely service-oriented trade to an expressive, poetic, and esteemed voice in contemporary visual culture. Today it continues to burgeon as a creative discipline — especially in its more artistic forms. Editorial design increasingly uses illustration in place of photography because it depicts and enriches content in a way that offers an expanded dimension of communication. Illustrators Unlimited presents the work of cutting-edge illustration talents scouted from around the world. They are working independently from fleeting trends and represent the best of the virtually inexhaustible possibilities of styles and techniques that are practiced today. The book is structured according to the featured illustrators. Each one is introduced with a variety of representative examples of his or her work plus a text portrait written by James Gaddy, a former editor at Print magazine. Whether created by established names or fresh talents, the work collected here has been chosen solely for its artistic merit. The lavish images covering page after page and insightful accompanying texts make Illustrators Unlimited a comprehensive overview of contemporary illustration. The book is a definitive reference for clients looking to commission work, for agencies, and anyone else who is interested in this multifaceted creative medium.

The suggestive power of packaging as a communication tool. Packaging is the face of a product. Packaging not only gives a product its visual identity, but it can also determine where that product is placed on a crowded store shelf and can be the crucial factor in determining our decision to buy. Over the last few years, however, the understanding of the role of packaging has changed. In the past, packaging was thought of as an extension of the product's print advertising campaign — as a mere projection screen for established logos and brand messages. Today, packaging is considered to be a self-contained facet of an overall communication concept. Boxed and Labelled 2 documents the main strategic directions that exist in current packaging design — all of which address a longing for truthfulness. One of these directions is an increased tendency to emphasize the tried and true values of a product, for example, with a retro look that aims for an Ah, just like grandma used to make! reaction. Another direction is down-to-earth rather than in-your-face packaging, including unostentatious solutions made of recycled paper that play up a product's connection to nature. On the other end of the design spectrum, there is also packaging that gives a product a distinct look and feel through a very playful use of graphic design, patterns, and illustration. Because our relationship to food products has changed so drastically in the last few years, especially in regard to the importance we place on the source and quality of ingredients, the majority of the examples in Boxed and Labelled 2 are food-related. But other examples from a wide spectrum of products also highlight the traits that distinguish those on the cutting edge of the evolution in packaging concepts. Although the work in Boxed and Labelled 2 ranges from minimalistic to whimsical, from clear-cut to ambiguous, all of the featured examples deliver their own unique brand values and experiences. With its inspiring and entertaining selection of products that stand apart in the competitive marketplace, this book is a compelling exploration of the communication power of stateof-the-art packaging design today.

These range from chart-like diagrams such as bar, plot, line diagrams and spider charts, graph-based diagrams including line, matrix, process flow, and molecular diagrams to extremely complex three-dimensional diagrams. Data Flow is an up-to-date survey providing cutting-edge aesthetics and inspirational solutions for designers, and at the same time unlocks a new field of visual codes... More and more information is being visualised. Diagrams, data and information graphics are utilised wherever increasingly complex elements are present, whether it is in magazines, non-fiction books or business reports, packages or exhibition designs. Data Flow presents an abundant range of possibilities in visualising data and information. Today, diagrams are being applied beyond their classical fields of use. In addition to archetypical diagrams such as pie charts and histograms, there are manifold types of diagrams developed for use in distinct cases and categories. These range from chart-like diagrams such as bar, plot, line diagrams and spider charts, graph-based diagrams including line, matrix, process flow, and molecular diagrams to extremely complex three-dimensional diagrams. The more concrete the variables, the more aesthetically elaborate the graphics – sometimes reaching the point of art – the more abstract, the simpler the readability. The abundant examples in Data Flow showcase the various methodologies behind information design with solutions concerning complexity, simplification, readability and the (over)production of information. In addition to the examples shown, the book features explanatory text.
